INTERNATIONAL PROTECTION TO THE UKRAINIANS WHO ARE IN SPAIN
The Congress of Ministers has agreed with an Informative Note of March 4, 2022 to regularize Ukrainian citizens who are in Spain irregularly due to the Russian invasion.
In this way, Ukrainians can access temporary protection in Spain. The war caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine that began on February 24, 2022 has caused the escape of tens of thousands of people residing in this country and others, who were in Spain before and cannot return to their country.
The Spanish Government has undertaken to ensure their well-being and attend to their needs, granting the reception of Ukrainians in the International Protection System. For this reason, and taking into account the dimensions of the humanitarian catastrophe caused by the war, and the impossibility of, prior to their reception, being able to provide all people with supporting documentation as an applicant for international protection, or as a beneficiary of temporary protection , has set some minimum criteria, based on the information available to date, to be able to welcome these people.
The following people may access the International Protection Reception System:
a) people displaced from Ukraine as of February 24, 2022 as a result of the Russian invasion that began on that date
b) people residing in Ukraine who were in Spain when the conflict broke out and have not been able to return to their country. In both cases, they include Ukrainian nationals residing in Ukraine and third-country nationals or stateless persons long-term residents of Ukraine, with their families.
To be accepted they must lack economic resources, and meet the rest of the requirements.
They must, as soon as possible and in any case within a maximum period of 3 months, be documented, either through an expression of willingness to apply for international protection, through an application for international protection, or through documentation proving that they are beneficiaries of temporary protection.
